A new 3DS with a second analog stick and more powerful CPU is coming to Japan in October, Nintendo announced in a live stream on Friday, though no Western release information was given.
The New 3DS and larger New 3DS XL will come with an additional, smaller analog "nub" above the face buttons on its right side. The face buttons have been colored to match the old-school SNES controller colors. There will also be two new shoulder buttons on the handheld's backside that sit next to the current L and R buttons.
Nintendo said the handheld will have a more powerful CPU, as well as an NFC chip compatible with the upcoming amiibo figures, which will use NFC to communicate with games such as Super Smash Bros.
The more-powerful CPU means some games will be playable only on the New 3DS, including the just-announced port of Wii RPG Xenoblade Chronicles.
The New 3DS, which comes in white and black, is priced at 16,000 yen, or U.S. $154. The New 3DS XL, which comes in metallic blue and black, is priced at 18,800 yen, or U.S. $181. Both systems come out Oct. 11 in Japan, but Nintendo has not given a release date for other countries.
